Young Adult Synod Update

Shroud Jesus
Christ Lives! A Time of Dreams and Decisions

DIOCESE OF SAN DIEGO
Office of the Synod

Bishop McElroy, in consultation with diocesan leadership this past spring, called for this synod in response to Pope Francis’ Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Christus Vivit, Christ is Alive! The goal of the synod is to engage “young adults to dream big and make decisions about walking with Christ and to engage the local church to accompany them in this mission of Jesus.”
Over the course of the summer, I am happy to say that plans are in the works for the 2019 Diocesan Young Adult Synod, Christ Lives! A Time of Dreams & Decisions. We have a great Synod Core Team in place with: Marioly Galvan (Chancellor and Director of Pastoral Ministries), Patrick Rivera and Pamela Poe (Young Adult Ministry), Maricruz Flores (Youth Ministry), John Prust (Family Life & Spirituality), Gerardo Rojas (Diocesan Institute) along with great administrative support from Erika Quevedo.

The Synod is divided into two phases.

The first phase is made up of seven deanery gatherings held in each deanery. Each parish young adult delegate will be accompanied by three young adults from their respective parishes in each deanery. These gatherings will be held between September 7th and October 13th.

The second phase is the General Assembly. The primary delegates to the assembly will include one young adult delegate from each of the parishes. They will be accompanied by the Deans and members of the Priests Council. This will be held at the Diocesan Pastoral Center on the weekend of October 26 and 27, 2019.

Young adults will explore and share with each five key aspects of their spiritual lives in response to Pope Francis’ invitation.
I. Walking with God…young adults will evaluate their spiritual and personal relationship with God.
II. Walking with the Church…young adults will assess their participation of the Catholic Church today.
III. Walking in Solidarity…young adults will explore how they are welcomed and accompanied in their parishes.
IV. Walking with Purpose…young adults will explore their calling in life by assessing their leadership, their sense of social service and making a difference in life as a Christian.
V. Walking towards Freedom…young adults will explore the elements of this Christian Freedom…As one who is freed by Christ, how can the diocese and/or parishes support you in living out this freedom for fullness of life and mission?

Prayer Cards are in final stages of production. Parishes will be informed when they are available. They will be available for pickup at the Pastoral Center, Synod Deanery Gatherings and the Priests Convocation. Together let us pray that the Holy Spirit will guide our Synod process!
